Agios Nikolaos


Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos and the Prefecture of Lasithi of the island of Crete. The lies on a little promontory that juts into the bay of Mirabello and is build on several hills making it a unique and picturesque landscape.

The town experienced very fast development and vigorous tourist activity in the 70’s and 80’s making it one of the most visited holiday destinations in Greece and famous worldwide. As with all region of Crete, Mediterranean weather, cleans seas and hospitality are qualities that a visitor generously enjoys in Agios Nikolaos. The past decades hundreds of people from all over the world have made the city their permanent residence.

The town’s history takes up back to antiquity in the the late Bronze age with the name city of lato pros Kamaran or Kamara, through the Roman period, where it flourished serving as a port. Prosperity continued until the Byzantine period. Venetians occupied the city until 1645 when the Turks arrived and they Venetians surrendered the fortress Castle of Mirabello ( the castle with the beautiful view ) which was build on the top of one of the hills. The Venetians retook the castle wiping out the Turks but destroyed the edifice which stood on the site of the modern Prefectural Headquarters. The Archaeological Museum houses a large number of finds from the Neolithic to the late Roman period.

Beside the lovely beaches in city and around it, most of them awarded with the international Blue Flag award, the picturesque landscape offers another famous landmark, the Lake of Agios Nikolaos as it is called today or Voulismeni. The lake today is connected with the sea with a small canal constructed by the Governor of Crete Adosidi Pasha ( 1867-71 ). The legend says that the lake is without a bottom and that it is connected with the volcanic caldera of Santorini. At the end of WWII the Germans through most of their ordance into the lake. The famous Jacques Cousteau has visited the lake in the past.
