Elounda


Part of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos and the Prefecture of Lasithi of the island of Crete, Elounda is a small beautiful fishing town that is known world wide as a famous tourist attraction because of it’s beautiful seaside landscape and the small island of Spinalonga (notable for being the last active leper colony from 1903 until 1957 ).

Overlooking Spinalonga is the small village of Plaka and the Kolokitha peninsula. The name originates from the ancient city of Olous, on part of which the town is build today.

The town is approximately 12 km from Agios Nikolaos and the road trip that climbsgives the visitor the rare opportunity of a unparalleled views of the Mirabello bay with Agios Nikolaos and Elounda as it follows the shoreline below enjoy the route, as the view of Mirabello bay you travel from Agios Nikolaos to Elounda the road follows the shore and starts to climb a small mountain above the Mirabello bay. As you leave Agios Nikolaos on your right and reach the top of the small mountain you suddenly see the rest of the bay with Elounda on your left. The view is unparalleled.

The many luxurious seaside resorts make Elounda a favourite destination by VIPs from all over the world. Royal families, celebrities and politics visit Elounda every year for their holidays. Many visitors have purchased property in the area as well exploiting the marvellous landscape, clean seas and Mediterranean weather. As a side note low criminal rate in Crete favours the latter reference.
